Meet Lonnie: 28 Years Strong in Radiology

Meet Lonnie Brown: 28 Years Strong in Radiology

Welcome to our Superhero Edition of the Navigating Travel Healthcare podcast.

Today, we’re honored to introduce you to a real-life superhero: Lonnie B., a dedicated professional in the field of CT and X-ray for 28 years. Lonnie’s story is a powerful reminder of the incredible impact healthcare heroes make, both in their hometowns and across the country.

His journey as a travel healthcare hero is rooted in a lifelong connection to his discipline. We dive into what inspired him, the moment he realized his calling, and why he ultimately chose to take his “superpowers on the road” with Anders Group.

The Best Kind of Broken: Lonnie's Inspiring Origin Story

Lonnie's inspiration for getting into radiology started in his hometown of Mansfield, Louisiana—not in a classroom, but on a bicycle. A childhood accident involving a bike, a tree, and several broken bones inadvertently set him on his career path.

"Then after going to the hospital, you know, taking the x-rays, getting the cast, and then having the doctor show you the x-rays and the bones," Lonnie shared. "After breaking a couple things, I said, you know what, I think I want to be a radiologist."

While he initially thought of becoming a radiologist, he discovered a passion for the hands-on aspect of the work. He found connection in being hands-on with patients, hearing their stories, and directly connecting with them—a theme that would define his decades-long career.

Making a  Difference

Lonnie recounted an impactful story from his early career that solidified his commitment to patient care. While working in X-ray, he cared for a young patient with autism who was scheduled for an upper GI procedure. The patient was distressed, and the staff was struggling to connect with her.

Lonnie was the one person who could calm her down, explain the procedure, and make her feel safe and comfortable. This single incident led to a lifelong bond with the patient and her mother.

They would only schedule appointments when they knew Lonnie was working, often asking: “Is Lonnie gonna be at work today? He’s the only one that can help her.” They even stopped by on days they didn’t have an appointment just to say hello. Lonnie’s ability to connect on a human level showcases the true meaning of being a travel healthcare hero.

Taking Superpowers on the Road

Lonnie eventually transitioned into travel healthcare, seeking a change in how he could use his advanced CT and X-ray skills. His decision was largely driven by the COVID-19 pandemic era), where many Rad Techs found themselves primarily running lab tests for COVID.

His motivation for traveling was clear:

  • He felt he wasn’t fully utilizing his diagnostic imaging skills.
  • He wanted to be more engaged with patient care, instead of 90% lab work and 10% imaging.
  • Traveling allowed him to get back to actively dealing with patients and utilizing his extensive experience.

We are incredibly grateful for professionals like Lonnie, who continue to make a tangible difference in facilities across the nation.

Lonnie is a shining example of the dedication and human connection that defines a travel healthcare hero. His ability to connect, his commitment to his craft, and his decision to travel to best apply his skills make him truly inspiring.
