Occupational Therapy Assistant Workforce

BLS counted 52,200 U.S. occupational therapy assistant jobs in 2025 and projects 21% growth from 2025 to 2035. These figures exclude occupational therapy aides. They describe the profession overall and don't count current travel COTA jobs or openings with Anders.

Where COTA Travel Jobs Fit the Market

BLS reports that therapy offices employed 39% of occupational therapy assistants in 2025. Nursing care facilities accounted for 19%, and hospitals for 17%. For travelers considering COTA travel jobs, office experience has relevance in the profession's largest employment setting. Hospital and skilled-nursing experience connect to another 36% of the workforce, nearly matching the office share.

Medicare changed supervision in private OT practices in 2025. Its rules now allow an OTA to work under an OT's general supervision, rather than requiring the therapist's physical presence throughout the service. State practice rules still apply. For travelers moving into private practice, the supervising OT needn't always be on site under Medicare's rule, while remaining responsible for supervision.

COTA Travel Jobs Questions

Can an occupational therapy assistant use the OT Compact?

Eligible occupational therapy assistants can use an approved OT Compact privilege in participating states. You must live in an eligible home state, hold an unencumbered license there and meet the compact's other requirements. A state joining the compact doesn't mean privileges are available there yet.

Can travel COTA jobs include Medicare maintenance therapy?

An OT may delegate Medicare Part B maintenance therapy to an OTA when clinically appropriate. CMS permits the same delegation discretion used for rehabilitative services. A maintenance goal therefore doesn't automatically exclude an assistant from providing the treatment; the OT decides which services to delegate.

Does a state license keep my COTA certification active between assignments?

An active state license doesn't keep NBCOT certification current. When applying for certified occupational therapy assistant travel jobs, you can't identify yourself as a COTA if NBCOT lists your certification as expired. Complete the applicable renewal or reinstatement process before using that credential again.

Do I need separate continuing education for every OT Compact privilege?

OT Compact participants complete continuing education for their home state, rather than separate CE for each privilege. A destination state may still require its own jurisprudence examination. Separately held state licenses and NBCOT certification have their own renewal requirements.
