Travel PT Jobs in Virginia: Settings and Access

Hospital-based PT work in Virginia includes outpatient care as well as inpatient roles. The 2024 PT workforce report puts hospital outpatient departments at 12% of reported primary work settings and hospital inpatient departments at 10%. Outpatient rehabilitation clinics account for another 18%. For travel physical therapy jobs in Virginia, hospital employment doesn't necessarily mean an inpatient caseload. Hospital outpatient departments can be a relevant option alongside rehabilitation clinics.

Virginia's direct-access rule includes a communication step when a patient is already receiving care for the same symptoms. The qualifying PT must get written consent to share records. Virginia law requires notification of the identified practitioner within 14 days of starting treatment, along with the initial evaluation and patient history. That requirement applies even though the patient didn't need a referral to begin PT.

Travel Physical Therapy Jobs in Virginia: FAQs

Can I use a compact privilege for travel PT jobs in Virginia?

An issued Virginia compact privilege provides practice authority for eligible PTs. The Virginia Board of Physical Therapy distinguishes that privilege from simply holding a license elsewhere. You need an active home-state license, must meet the Compact's eligibility conditions and must obtain the Virginia privilege before practicing.

Does a CAPTE-accredited DPT need Virginia direct-access certification?

A graduate of a CAPTE-approved DPT program doesn't need the separate direct-access certificate. Virginia law also permits eligible PTs who obtain that certificate to treat without referral. Both routes remain subject to the patient-care conditions in section 54.1-3482, including referral when a condition falls outside PT scope.

How often must a Virginia PT reevaluate patients treated by a PTA?

For hospital inpatients, at least every seven consecutive days. In other settings, Virginia section 18VAC112-20-120 generally requires reevaluation by the earlier of the 12th encounter or 30 days. For care of the same condition lasting six months or more, reevaluate at least once every 90 days. Clinical need can require earlier review; a limited exception covers PT absence for illness, vacation or a professional meeting for up to five consecutive days.

What does Virginia require before I perform dry needling?

Additional postgraduate training must meet Virginia's dry-needling rule, including face-to-face laboratory instruction and theoretical and practical exams through an approved course. Informed consent covering risks and benefits must be kept in the patient record. The procedure cannot be delegated to a PTA, and you can't practice beyond your training.

What if a Virginia patient leaves before I can perform a discharge reevaluation?

If discharge occurs before you have an opportunity to reevaluate, the final patient-record note may document the patient's status. Virginia's general-responsibilities rule allows that approach. It doesn't remove the PT's responsibility to document discharge status and the patient's response to treatment.
