Rehab Hospitals and Direct Access in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania's rehabilitation hospitals serve an older patient population over longer stays than its general acute care hospitals. PHC4's fiscal 2024 report puts the average inpatient age at 71 in rehabilitation hospitals, compared with 55 in general acute care. Average stays were 13.8 and 5.6 days, respectively. For PTs interested in geriatric rehabilitation, that pairs an older inpatient population with a longer period of inpatient recovery.

A Pennsylvania outpatient handoff doesn't reset the referral deadline. Pennsylvania's practice-without-referral rule lets a PT with a certificate of authorization treat without a referral for up to 30 calendar days. The clock starts with the first treatment by any PT treating that patient without one. Your first visit could fall near the deadline, so the original treatment date belongs in the handoff alongside the current plan.

FAQ: Travel Physical Therapy Jobs in Pennsylvania

How often must a Pennsylvania PT see home health patients treated by a PTA?

At least every seven patient visits or every 14 days, whichever comes first. Under 49 Pa. Code section 40.173, this applies when the PTA holds a current certificate of authority for indirect supervision. The PT must make an onsite visit, examine the patient and actively participate in treatment. Multiple visits on one date count as one patient visit.

Do I need malpractice insurance to hold a Pennsylvania PT license?

Yes, at least $1 million per occurrence or claims made. Section 40.69 accepts employer coverage, a personal policy, qualifying self-insurance or similar coverage. Proof must show the coverage dates and amounts on an insurance certificate or declarations page. If your license was issued on a carrier's letter, it becomes inactive by law after 30 days unless you've submitted that proof.

Do I need Pennsylvania child-abuse training if I will treat only adults?

For an initial Pennsylvania PT license, applicants must complete three hours of board-approved child-abuse recognition and reporting education. The requirement attaches to the license application, even if the planned assignment serves adults, and 2 of the 30 renewal CE hours have to be in the same topic. This is a state-license requirement; don't apply it automatically to a PT entering through a compact privilege.

Can a Pennsylvania facility require me to work past my scheduled shift?

Pennsylvania's Act 102 protects covered hourly direct-care staff, including agency workers, from mandatory overtime. Private or group-practice offices aren't covered. Exceptions include permitted on-call work, unforeseeable emergencies and finishing a procedure already underway when leaving could harm the patient. Emergency overtime is a last resort after reasonable staffing efforts. Chronic short staffing isn't an emergency, and on-call arrangements can't evade the law. You can still agree to overtime.
