Travel PT Jobs in Illinois: State Outlook

O*NET's Illinois projections count 11,120 PT jobs in 2024 and forecast 560 annual openings for 2024-2034, including growth and replacement hiring. Projected employment growth is 12%. They cover all PT employment, not open travel physical therapist jobs in Illinois.

Illinois PT Markets and License Planning

Illinois' regional PT markets differ sharply in size. BLS's May 2025 estimates count 7,880 PT jobs in the Chicago metro, which includes Indiana, compared with 300 in Peoria, 190 in Rockford and 150 in Springfield. These are total employment estimates, not vacancies. For travel physical therapist jobs in Illinois, that state line matters: an assignment described as Chicago-area isn't necessarily located in Illinois.

Ten consecutive years of licensed PT practice without discipline can provide a basis for Illinois licensure by endorsement. The state's March 2026 licensing qualifications require applicants to hold an active PT license from a U.S. jurisdiction. Those ten years must be licensed PT practice in the United States or its territories.

Travel Physical Therapy Jobs in Illinois FAQs

Can I start PT treatment in Illinois without a referral?

Illinois generally allows PT treatment without a referral. The Physical Therapy Act requires notice to the patient's treating health care professional within five business days of the first visit. Fitness and wellness visits are exempt unless there's an ailment or injury. If there's no measurable or functional improvement after 10 visits or 15 business days, whichever comes first, referral is required. Wound debridement still requires written authorization from a health care professional.

Is Illinois accepting PT Compact privileges yet?

Not yet, as of October 2026. The PT Compact map lists Illinois under introduced legislation, so Illinois isn't issuing or accepting compact privileges. A compact privilege doesn't authorize practice there. Illinois endorsement applications go through IDFPR's CORE system.

Can an Illinois facility schedule me seven days in a row?

For employees covered by Illinois' One Day Rest in Seven Act, working a seventh consecutive day requires voluntary agreement and a state permit. The Department of Labor's ODRISA FAQ says the employer has to show that everyone working the seventh day volunteered. Certain employees are exempt, including those in qualifying professional roles, so this protection doesn't apply to every PT assignment. A collective bargaining agreement may govern days off instead.

What supervision does Illinois require when I work with a PTA?

Illinois requires general supervision of a PTA, with ongoing contact plus periodic personal supervision and instruction. Under the Illinois Physical Therapy Act, evaluations, treatment planning and major changes to patient programs remain the PT's responsibility. A PTA can help carry out the treatment program but can't take over those decisions.

Will Illinois withhold income tax if I remain a resident of a neighboring state?

Residents of Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan and Wisconsin can claim exemption from Illinois income-tax withholding on compensation earned in Illinois. Give Form IL-W-5-NR to your employer to claim it; the employer keeps a copy on file. The reciprocal agreements cover only those four states.
