Travel Physical Therapy Jobs in Illinois FAQs
Can I start PT treatment in Illinois without a referral?
Illinois generally allows PT treatment without a referral. The Physical Therapy Act requires notice to the patient's treating health care professional within five business days of the first visit. Fitness and wellness visits are exempt unless there's an ailment or injury. If there's no measurable or functional improvement after 10 visits or 15 business days, whichever comes first, referral is required. Wound debridement still requires written authorization from a health care professional.
Is Illinois accepting PT Compact privileges yet?
Not yet, as of October 2026. The PT Compact map lists Illinois under introduced legislation, so Illinois isn't issuing or accepting compact privileges. A compact privilege doesn't authorize practice there. Illinois endorsement applications go through IDFPR's CORE system.
Can an Illinois facility schedule me seven days in a row?
For employees covered by Illinois' One Day Rest in Seven Act, working a seventh consecutive day requires voluntary agreement and a state permit. The Department of Labor's ODRISA FAQ says the employer has to show that everyone working the seventh day volunteered. Certain employees are exempt, including those in qualifying professional roles, so this protection doesn't apply to every PT assignment. A collective bargaining agreement may govern days off instead.
What supervision does Illinois require when I work with a PTA?
Illinois requires general supervision of a PTA, with ongoing contact plus periodic personal supervision and instruction. Under the Illinois Physical Therapy Act, evaluations, treatment planning and major changes to patient programs remain the PT's responsibility. A PTA can help carry out the treatment program but can't take over those decisions.
Will Illinois withhold income tax if I remain a resident of a neighboring state?
Residents of Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan and Wisconsin can claim exemption from Illinois income-tax withholding on compensation earned in Illinois. Give Form IL-W-5-NR to your employer to claim it; the employer keeps a copy on file. The reciprocal agreements cover only those four states.
