Travel PT Jobs in California: Market Outlook

BLS's May 2025 estimate counts 26,580 employed physical therapists statewide, and it doesn't separate travel physical therapist jobs in California from other PT positions. The state's 2024-2034 forecast projects 26% growth in PT employment across practice settings over the decade.

California PT Practice and Patient Safety

Safe transfers depend on both equipment and available assistance. At covered general acute care hospitals, California's safe patient handling standard requires a plan addressing lifting equipment, staffing and training, including coordination with workers employed by other companies. For PT travelers treating patients who need transfer support, those arrangements shape how treatment can be delivered throughout the day.

California's direct-access rule lets a PT treat without a referral for up to 45 calendar days or 12 visits, whichever comes first. Care beyond that limit requires a dated signature approving the plan of care and an examination by a qualified physician or podiatrist. Certain wellness and education-plan services are exempt. With frequent visits, that approval can be due well before day 45, affecting the outpatient caseload you take over.

Travel Physical Therapy Jobs in California: Q&A

Can I use a PT Compact privilege for a California assignment?

As of October 2026, California requires its own PT license and doesn't accept PT Compact privileges. A privilege for another state doesn't authorize you to practice in California.

Can I complete California fingerprinting before moving there?

You can use fingerprint hard cards if you won't be in California during the application process. California Live Scan is the option for applicants in the state. Previous fingerprints submitted to another agency don't replace the PT board's requirement.

Do I have to be in California to take the PT law exam?

You can take California's PT law exam on your own computer outside the state. The board's CAL-JAM instructions give you 96 hours after receiving the Authorization to Test letter to take it. That's the exam window, not a promise of when your license will arrive.

Must I stay nearby when a physical therapy aide treats patients in California?

You must remain within audible reach while an aide provides patient care under your direct and immediate supervision. The California PT board's aide guidance also requires the supervising PT to provide direct service to the patient that day and document the care. You also have to evaluate each patient yourself before an aide provides any treatment.

Does driving between home-health patients count as work time?

For a nonexempt employee covered by federal wage-and-hour rules, travel between work sites during the workday counts as hours worked. That includes driving between patient visits. It isn't the same as the ordinary commute. When comparing California home-health offers, include that travel in the workday rather than judging the workload by visit count alone.
