Radiography Hiring and Vacancy Trends

Travel rad tech jobs draw on a workforce with ongoing hiring needs. ASRT's 2025 survey reported 15.6% radiography vacancy. BLS projects about 13,000 annual openings for radiologic technologists and technicians during 2025-35. That broader occupation includes CT; the openings are not travel-only.

Choosing Between Travel Radiology Tech Jobs

Radiography is the foundation of medical imaging, and travel rad tech jobs are in demand nationwide because of it. Many radiologic technologists broaden into additional modalities over time, and ASRT's practice standards reflect the depth and structure of the profession. For radiologic tech travel jobs, that can mean a position includes responsibilities beyond general X-ray. The mix of work often depends on the facility, department needs, and available staff, making cross-trained technologists especially valuable in settings where imaging teams need more flexibility.

The profession continues to span both general radiography and more advanced imaging pathways. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects overall employment of radiologic and MRI technologists to grow 5% from 2025 to 2035. Travel radiologic technologists fit into that broader field by bringing portable imaging experience to hospitals and imaging departments that may need support across routine, inpatient, emergency and procedural work.

Answers for Travel X-Ray Tech Jobs

How much experience do travel Rad Tech jobs require?

Most travel Rad Tech jobs require two years of recent radiography experience. Some accept one year. Each job page states the experience needed for that role.

Does ARRT certification let me work in every state?

No. ARRT certification does not automatically grant state practice authority. Where your radiography work requires a state license, you must hold it before practicing. Applying for that license is not the same as receiving it.

Does ARRT radiography certification automatically cover a combined X-ray and CT role?

No. ARRT certification in radiography does not also certify you in CT. ARRT's CT credential has separate requirements for structured education, clinical experience, ethics, and examination. A combined role must match the qualifications required for both parts of the job.

Do I renew my ARRT credentials every year or every two years?

Renew your ARRT certification and registration every year; CE is reported every other year. ARRT's deadlines also distinguish finishing CE from reporting it: required activities must be completed by the end of the month before your birth month, one month before the renewal and reporting deadline.
