Travel Sterile Processing Jobs Workforce Snapshot

BLS projects 11% growth for medical equipment preparers in 2025-35, a broader occupation that includes sterile processing. HSPA counted 54,525 current CRCST holders on December 31, 2025. These give travel sterile processing jobs wider workforce context, rather than a count of current vacancies.

Workforce Behind Traveling Sterile Processing Jobs

The workforce supporting sterile processing is expanding. BLS's medical equipment preparer projections show employment rising from 79,900 in 2025 to 88,600 in 2035. This occupational group includes sterile processing and other equipment-preparation work. Travel sterile processing jobs bring technicians into departments that support operating rooms, procedural areas and other services by cleaning, assembling, sterilizing and managing instruments. In larger surgical programs, the scale and complexity of that work can make the department a major operation of its own.

Professional certification is well established within sterile processing. The Healthcare Sterile Processing Association's CRCST credential recognizes the knowledge and hands-on experience involved in decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging and sterilization. For travelers, that professional framework reflects why sterile processing is more than a support function: it is a specialized field that connects directly to safe surgical care.

Travel Sterile Processing Jobs Questions

Are CRCST and CSPDT the same certification?

No. CRCST is issued by HSPA, while CSPDT is issued by CBSPD. Both are sterile processing credentials, but they are distinct. If a posting names only one, holding the other does not establish that you meet its stated requirement.

How much experience do travel sterile processing jobs require?

Most jobs require 2 years of recent sterile processing experience; some facilities accept 1 year. The individual job page gives the minimum for that opening.

Does provisional CRCST status mean I have met every certification requirement?

No. Provisional status means the CRCST exam has been passed, but the required 400 hours of hands-on experience still need to be documented. HSPA normally allows 6 months after the exam to submit those hours. Provisional status is different from full CRCST certification.

Is my CRCST certification still active during HSPA's renewal grace period?

No. HSPA's renewal policy says certification is suspended during the grace period. You cannot use the CRCST credential or represent yourself as certified until reinstatement is complete. A grace period therefore does not satisfy an opening's requirement for current CRCST certification.
