Travel Surgical Tech Jobs Workforce Outlook

BLS projects 7,100 surgical technologist openings per year on average in 2025-35. NBSTSA reports 88,226 current CST certificants in its 2025 data. For travel surgical tech jobs, these show broader hiring needs and credentialed workforce size. The certification count does not measure available travelers or unfilled jobs.

Planning for Surgical Tech Travel Jobs

Surgical technologists work at the center of the operating room team, helping prepare the sterile field, manage instruments and support procedures from setup through completion. Travel surgical tech jobs take those skills into hospitals and surgical programs with different service-line strengths, from general surgery and orthopedics to neuro, robotics and other specialties.

Surgical technology has a national certification structure that reflects the profession's specialized role in the OR. The NBSTSA Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential is centered on the knowledge and skills used throughout surgical procedures. The Bureau of Labor Statistics also notes that most surgical technologists work in hospitals, which helps explain why hospital-based travel assignments remain such a natural extension of the field.

Travel Surgical Tech Jobs FAQs

How much experience is needed for travel surgical tech jobs?

Most assignments require 2 years of recent surgical tech experience. Some facilities accept 1 year. Each job page states the minimum for that opening.

Does a CST credential also qualify me as a CSFA?

No. CST and CSFA are separate NBSTSA credentials. CSFA certification has its own eligibility requirements and exam, including graduation from a CAAHEP-accredited surgical first assistant program. Holding a CST does not automatically confer the CSFA credential.

Are CST and TS-C the same credential?

No. NBSTSA issues the CST, while NCCT issues the TS-C. They are separate surgical technology certifications. A posting that specifically requires CST does not establish that TS-C will be accepted in its place.

Can a CST take a sterile processing assignment?

Yes, but the facility may require additional training and an appropriate sterile processing credential. AST recognizes central sterile supply as another employment route for CSTs. Its guidance calls for a facility-specific assessment of skills, so CST status alone does not establish readiness for every sterile processing opening.
