Mammography Staffing and Procedure Volume

FDA's October 1st, 2026 tally aggregates 45.1 million annual mammography procedures reported during reaccreditation, excluding Veterans Health Administration facilities. It isn't a 2026 exam count. ASRT's 2025 survey found 11.4% vacancy in responding U.S. mammography departments. Neither figure counts current travel mammography jobs.

Travel Mammography Tech Jobs: Clinical Standards

Digital breast tomosynthesis is available across most of the certified mammography network. FDA's October 2026 statistics list DBT at 8,683 of 9,137 facilities, about 95%. That measures equipment availability, not the share of exams performed in 3D. For technologists considering travel mammography jobs, DBT experience has relevance across a broad network rather than a small group of specialist centers.

Waiting for prior images doesn't leave a mammography assessment open indefinitely. Under FDA's amended MQSA rules, an assessment of "Incomplete: Need prior mammograms for comparison" requires a final follow-up report within 30 calendar days of the initial report. That deadline holds even if the priors never arrive. For travelers, retrieving comparison images is part of a time-limited follow-up process, not an open-ended administrative task.

Mammography Travel Job FAQs

Must every digital mammography site use the manufacturer's QC program?

Facilities may use the FDA-approved ACR Digital Mammography QC program instead of the manufacturer's program for FFDM and DBT. ACR guidance explains that tests and frequencies can differ between programs. Working on the same equipment model doesn't necessarily mean using the same QC routine at each site.

How many mammograms must I perform to maintain MQSA continuing experience?

MQSA requires at least 200 mammograms in 24 months once continuing experience applies. The facility measures back from its annual inspection date, the end of the preceding calendar quarter, or a date between them.

What if I fall short of the MQSA continuing-experience requirement?

You must requalify before performing mammograms without supervision. MQSA requires at least 25 exams under the direct supervision of a qualified radiologic technologist. Meeting an employer's experience minimum doesn't replace this step.

Can I get my mammography qualification records from a former employer?

MQSA requires the former facility to provide your personnel records when you request them within 24 months of leaving. After that, it must still provide records it has retained. These records can document your mammography training and experience when you move to another facility.
