Travel X-Ray Tech Jobs in Massachusetts: Outlook

Massachusetts' 2024-2034 state projection forecasts 1% employment growth over the decade for radiologic technologists and technicians. These workforce measures don't count current travel openings. BLS estimated 5,500 employed statewide in May 2025 across this broader occupation.

Massachusetts Radiography Staffing Pressure

Radiologic technologist vacancies reached 14.2% in acute care hospitals in the Center for Health Information and Analysis (CHIA) 2025 workforce survey, which reports 2024 conditions. The estimate draws on 29 responding organizations. That is roughly one vacant position in seven. Radiography travelers enter a hospital sector with documented staffing pressure even though the state's long-term employment forecast calls for little net growth.

In CHIA's weighted results, 45% of responding acute care hospitals named radiologic technologists as their hardest role to recruit. That was the highest share among the occupations surveyed. For radiography travelers, this identifies a hiring difficulty specific to their specialty: hospitals singled it out more often than nursing or the other professions in the survey.

Travel Radiology Tech Jobs in Massachusetts: FAQs

Does ARRT registration replace a Massachusetts radiography license?

You need a current Massachusetts license for radiologic practice. 105 CMR 125.002 makes the state authorization separate from your national registry. ARRT registration may support your application, but it doesn't let you begin a Massachusetts radiography assignment before the required license is issued.

Can a Massachusetts limited license cover portable or contrast exams?

A limited license doesn't authorize those exams. Under 105 CMR 125.005, limited-scope technologists can't perform fluoroscopy, procedures using contrast, or mobile or remote imaging. Limited licenses cover specified anatomical areas, so they don't substitute for a full radiography license on a broader assignment.

Do Massachusetts radiography and CT licenses each need 24 CE hours?

For radiography plus CT, Massachusetts requires 24 CE hours total every two years. 105 CMR 125.009 assigns at least four hours to each licensed discipline and two to radiation safety. The remaining hours must relate to health care practice, radiation safety or the specialty.

Can I request my dosimetry records before leaving a job?

Current employees can request their exposure records under OSHA's access rule. You don't have to wait until you leave. If access can't reasonably be provided within 15 working days, the employer must explain the delay within that period and give the earliest availability date.
