Q&A on Travel Nurse Assignments in Colorado
Can I take travel nurse jobs in Colorado with only a California RN license?
A California RN license doesn't carry a Colorado practice privilege. If California remains your legal residence, you need a Colorado single-state RN license. The compact rules for noncompact residents allow that license without requiring you to surrender your California license.
How soon must I apply for a Colorado license if I permanently move there?
Apply for licensure by endorsement within 60 days of changing your legal primary residence. This applies if you hold a multistate license, move from another compact state to Colorado and will continue practicing. The NLC rule sets an application deadline, not a promise of issuance. Temporary assignments don't trigger it.
Can a Colorado hospital float me to a unit I am not trained for?
The hospital must ensure you're qualified for the care assigned. Colorado hospital rules require the senior nurse executive to ensure nursing staff have the education, competencies and experience needed for their assignments. A float assignment doesn't waive those requirements merely because you hold an RN license.
Can bedside nurses raise staffing concerns through a formal process?
Colorado hospitals must have a written process for receiving, tracking and resolving staffing complaints. Under the nursing-services rules, that process must be available to providers, including clinical nurses. At least 60% of the nurse staffing committee must be direct-care clinical nurses, giving bedside staff a defined role in the staffing framework.
