FAQs on Travel Nurse Assignments in California
Can I work in California with a compact RN license?
As of October 2026, California is outside the Nurse Licensure Compact. A multistate license from another state does not authorize California RN practice. You need California licensure, including an issued temporary license where applicable, before providing nursing care.
Can I start travel nurse assignments in California with a temporary license?
You can work with an issued, valid California temporary RN license while permanent licensure is pending. The BRN temporary-license guidance sets a six-month validity period and requires fingerprint results before issuance. Submitting an application doesn't authorize practice, and extending an assignment doesn't extend that license.
Do California hospital staffing ratios apply during meal breaks?
Required ratios apply at all times, including breaks. California section 70217 prohibits averaging patient numbers across a shift to meet the ratio. The ratios are minimum licensed-nurse staffing levels; patient acuity can require more staff, and some units have additional RN-specific requirements.
Do travel nurses need California continuing education to renew their RN license?
California generally requires 30 contact hours of accepted continuing education every two years to maintain an active RN license. Qualifying first renewals after the licensing examination have a limited exemption, with the implicit-bias requirement still applicable. Travel status does not create a separate exemption.
Can a California hospital assign me to an unfamiliar clinical unit?
Assignment requires demonstrated competence for that unit's patients. Under section 70217, hospitals must validate competence before assigning a nurse to a clinical area, including temporary staff. Holding a California license doesn't replace that unit-specific requirement. Prior validation and orientation provisions still apply when you move between units.
