Emergency Room Travel Nurse Jobs in Illinois: Q&A

Can I start in Illinois while my permanent RN license is pending?

Yes, with an issued temporary permit, not just a pending file. Illinois isn't a Nurse Licensure Compact state, so a multistate license from your home state carries no privilege there. The IDFPR endorsement instructions make the permit valid for six months from issuance, or until the Illinois RN license is issued or the Department gives notice it intends to deny, whichever comes first, and put the burden on you to finish the endorsement before the permit expires.

Can an Illinois hospital require overtime to cover routine staffing shortages?

No, routine staffing shortages don't qualify for Illinois' mandatory-overtime exception. For hourly nurses providing or overseeing care, mandatory overtime is a last resort for unforeseen emergencies. One exception is finishing a procedure that needs specialized nursing skills. Such mandatory overtime cannot exceed four hours beyond the agreed shift.

Does a Level II trauma designation mean a lower-acuity ER assignment in Illinois?

A Level II designation doesn't guarantee lower-acuity work. Illinois Level II trauma centers treat Category I trauma patients and must provide a trauma service separate from general surgery. The designation describes required trauma resources and response times, not how busy your shift will be or the patient mix you'll encounter.

Do I need two years of ER experience before I can sit for the CEN?

No, experience is recommended, not required. BCEN asks for a current, unencumbered RN license and recommends at least two years in the specialty, but says that isn't required to sit for the CEN exam. Any active restriction, suspension or probation on your license disqualifies you, and the same rule applies at recertification. A hospital's own ER experience requirement for a travel assignment is a separate question from exam eligibility.
