Emergency Room Travel Nurse Jobs in Texas: FAQs
What protects me in Texas if I'm given an unsafe nursing assignment?
Invoke safe harbor before starting the assignment or conduct in question. The Texas Board of Nursing allows an oral request to your supervisor when immediate patient care prevents writing. The supervisor records it. You both must sign and attest to the record. Submit the comprehensive written request before leaving at the end of the work period. Protections are the same whether you accept or refuse. A good-faith refusal must include your reason at the time.
Can I start a Texas assignment while my permanent RN license is pending?
You can start under a Texas temporary RN license if you also meet the facility's hiring requirements. Endorsement applicants who practiced nursing in another state within the previous four years can get one. It's valid for 120 days and non-renewable, and a nurse with disciplinary action from any licensing authority isn't eligible until the board finishes an eligibility determination. Submitting an application by itself doesn't authorize practice, and the 120 days keep running if the assignment continues past them.
Can I see the staffing levels planned for my Texas hospital unit?
Texas hospitals must make the official staffing-plan levels and current staffing levels readily available to nurses on each unit at the beginning of each shift. Section 257.003 also requires a method for adjusting the staffing plan for each unit and a contingency plan for when patient care needs unexpectedly exceed direct-care staff. That gives you a concrete basis for comparing planned and actual coverage. The requirement doesn't promise advance access to a hospital's staffing plan as a job applicant.
Will my existing multistate RN license cover a temporary Texas assignment?
Yes, if it's a multistate license and you keep that home state. Under the Nurse Licensure Compact, a nurse with an active multistate license can practice in Texas without notifying or registering with the Texas board, and the NLC's travel nurse FAQ says there's no time limit as long as you maintain your primary state of residence. Living in a compact state doesn't make a license multistate by itself; Nursys shows your status. Moving your primary residence to Texas starts a 60-day clock to apply for a Texas license.
