Emergency Room Travel Nurse Jobs in North Carolina: FAQs

Do ER travel nurse jobs in North Carolina require a separate state license?

A valid multistate license from another compact home state can authorize your practice. The North Carolina Board of Nursing doesn't issue an endorsement license while another compact state remains your primary residence. A single-state license from elsewhere doesn't provide that multistate privilege.

How long can a North Carolina temporary endorsement license last?

It lasts up to six months or until the permanent license is issued, whichever comes first. The Board of Nursing can issue it only within six months of your endorsement application and only once in your lifetime. It isn't renewable or an automatic extension of a pending application.

Do nurse-driven ER protocols count as standing orders in North Carolina?

They can, but the title doesn't change the requirements. The Board's standing-orders statement says protocols serving as standing orders must meet the same criteria, including written, signed and dated provider instructions. They must define when a nurse can act and when the provider must be contacted.

Can one RN give RSI medications and perform the intubation?

One RN can't cover both roles at once under the North Carolina Board's RSI statement. The nurse giving medications must continuously monitor the patient. A qualified physician, CRNA, NP or PA must be at the bedside during in-hospital RSI; that requirement doesn't make the monitoring role interchangeable with intubation.
