Labor and delivery travel nurse jobs serve a maternity system with 3.61 million U.S. births in 2025, per provisional CDC data. NCC lists 29,363 RNC-OB certificants (count accessed September 2026). These measures describe birth volume and a certified obstetric nursing workforce, not available assignments.

Staffing and Care Levels in L&D Travel Nurse Jobs

Labor and delivery nursing combines maternal care, fetal monitoring, rapid clinical decision-making and support through one of the most significant moments in a patient's life. Hospitals remain the largest employer of registered nurses, accounting for 59% of RN jobs in 2025, according to BLS. For L&D travel nurses, hospital-based assignments can offer experience across different birth volumes, patient populations and maternal care programs while allowing them to continue building expertise in a highly specialized area of nursing.

Labor and delivery is supported by specialty credentials that reflect the depth of obstetric nursing practice. The National Certification Corporation's RNC-OB credential covers care across the antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum and newborn periods. For L&D travelers, that broad specialty knowledge is especially valuable because birth volume, maternal acuity and unit structure can vary so much from one hospital to another.

Travel Labor and Delivery Nurse Jobs FAQs

Can I take an L&D travel job with one year of experience?

Some facilities accept one year of recent labor and delivery experience, but most jobs require two years. Each L&D job page states the experience requirement for that opening.

Are 2,000 hours enough to qualify for RNC-OB?

No. NCC requires both 24 months of specialty experience as a U.S. or Canadian RN and at least 2,000 hours for RNC-OB eligibility. You also need a current, active, unencumbered U.S. or Canadian RN license and specialty employment within the last 24 months. Reaching the hours requirement early doesn't replace the required months.

Is a fetal monitoring course the same as C-EFM certification?

No. C-EFM is NCC's national electronic fetal monitoring certification, earned through its certification examination. Completing a fetal monitoring course alone doesn't award C-EFM. A course-completion record and the C-EFM credential document different achievements, so one shouldn't be represented as the other.

Can I renew NRP through online coursework alone?

No. The AAP's traditional NRP renewal path includes online learning and an instructor-led, hands-on event. Hospitals using RQI for NRP also require skills sessions. Finishing only the online coursework doesn't complete the practical requirements for NRP provider status.
