Case Coverage and Call for Travel OR Nurses

Operating room nursing is a highly specialized area built around surgical workflow, patient safety and close teamwork. OR travel nurse jobs place experienced perioperative nurses in surgical departments that may cover everything from general and orthopedic procedures to robotics, neuro, cardiovascular and other specialty cases.

Perioperative nursing has its own national specialty standard through the CNOR credential from the Competency & Credentialing Institute. The certification focuses on the knowledge and skills used in perioperative practice, which mirrors the specialized nature of OR travel nursing. Travelers may move between very different surgical programs, but the core expectations around patient safety, surgical workflow and team coordination carry across assignments.

Operating Room Travel Nurse Jobs Questions

How much OR experience do I need to travel?

Most OR travel jobs require two years of recent operating room experience, though some facilities accept one year. The requirement for each opening is listed on its individual job page.

Can I qualify for CNOR before two years as an OR nurse?

Yes, through CCI's shorter experience pathway for nurses with CFPN, CST, TS-C or the military equivalent. That pathway requires 18 months and 2,400 hours as a perioperative RN, including 1,200 intraoperative hours. You also need a current unrestricted RN license and current perioperative employment. This is certification eligibility, separate from an employer's travel-job requirements.

Does CNOR alone qualify me to work as an RN first assistant?

No. CNOR alone doesn't qualify an RN for first assisting. AORN's RNFA standard also calls for formal RNFA education and compliance with applicable state and facility rules. First assisting requires additional preparation beyond circulating or scrubbing experience.

Can I renew CNOR by retaking the certification exam?

No. CCI no longer offers CNOR recertification by exam. Renewal uses eligible professional activity points and requires an active RN license, qualifying perioperative work and a recertification application. Plan those activities around assignments instead of relying on another exam to keep the credential current.
