South Carolina Radiologic Workforce Outlook

BLS counted 3,630 radiologic technologists and technicians in South Carolina in May 2025. These figures cover the broader radiologic workforce, including CT. O*NET's state projections estimate 220 annual openings for 2024-2034, including growth and replacement hiring across employment types.

CT Screening and Stroke Care in South Carolina

Only 18.8% of South Carolinians at high risk for lung cancer were screened in the American Lung Association's 2025 report. The national rate was 18.2%. Low-dose CT screening reaches a small share of the eligible population here. Travelers with screening experience bring skills that address this unmet need beyond scans prompted by symptoms.

South Carolina's rules describe telemedicine-enabled stroke centers with 24/7 consultation and a transfer plan to at least one primary or comprehensive center. For CT travelers, urgent imaging at the local hospital can support decisions made with a remote stroke team before transfer. That puts CT into a care pathway extending beyond the hospital where the scan takes place.

CT Technologist Travel Jobs in South Carolina: FAQs

Is ARRT enough for travel CT tech jobs in South Carolina?

You still need South Carolina certification. Under the Medical Radiation Health and Safety Act, ARRT certification qualifies you for initial state certification without another examination, but you must apply. The act includes CT within radiography and requires a current certificate for practice.

Does ACR accreditation always require an advanced CT credential?

An advanced CT exam is recommended, rather than a universal minimum, in ACR's CT criteria. You still need documented training and experience in CT equipment, radiation physics and protection. ACR accreditation doesn't replace South Carolina's separate certification requirement.

Can a remote radiologist be the only support for contrast CT?

ACR's contrast-supervision guidance calls for qualified on-site support in addition to the scanning technologist. A physician may supervise that support remotely when law and policy allow. The on-site clinician must have the training and authority to assess and manage contrast reactions.

Can I obtain my radiation-exposure records after an assignment?

Former employees retain access to their exposure records under OSHA's records-access standard. The employer must provide access within 15 working days when possible. If it can't, it must explain the delay within those 15 working days and give the earliest availability date.
