MRI Tech Travel Jobs in Pennsylvania: Outlook

Pennsylvania had about 2,250 MRI technologists in May 2025, according to BLS. That is an employment estimate, not a count of open travel jobs. For 2024-2034, O*NET reports 130 projected annual openings across the state's MRI workforce.

Where Pennsylvania's MRI Work Takes Place

Outpatient exams account for about 82% of the MRI volume reported by Pennsylvania hospitals. The state's 2024 Hospital Report 10 recorded roughly 1.05 million outpatient exams out of 1.28 million total MRI exams. These are hospital-reported figures, not all MRI activity statewide. For an MRI traveler, a hospital assignment doesn't necessarily mean a mainly inpatient workload.

About 68% of the report's MRI exams took place outside Philadelphia and Allegheny counties. Lancaster and York counties alone reported more than 109,000 combined. That spread includes suburban areas and smaller cities. For travelers with a hospital MRI background, it means most of the state's hospital MRI volume sits outside Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, not inside them.

Travel MRI Technologist Jobs in Pennsylvania: FAQs

Is mandatory overtime restricted for travel MRI tech jobs in Pennsylvania?

Yes, Act 102 can protect agency MRI techs at covered facilities from mandatory overtime. It covers hourly staff or employees classified as nonsupervisory for collective bargaining. Exceptions include certain emergencies, permitted on-call work and procedures that cannot safely be interrupted. You can still agree to voluntary overtime.

Can an ARRT MRI credential be valid without radiography?

Yes, ARRT's primary MRI pathway doesn't require radiography registration. It includes an approved MRI program, a degree, ethics requirements and an exam. You can hold MRI registration on its own, though employers may require other credentials for specific roles.

Can prescribed CQR credits also satisfy my regular ARRT CE?

Prescribed CQR continuing education can also count toward biennial CE. You don't necessarily need two separate sets of coursework. CQR is the ten-year requirement for ARRT credentials earned on or after January 1st, 2011.

Can the scanning MRI tech also monitor a moderately sedated patient?

The American Society of Anesthesiologists calls for a different person to monitor the patient during moderate sedation. For an MRI exam, that separates sedation monitoring from running the scan. The monitor must be trained to recognize breathing problems and obtain help.

Does an older radiography credential exempt my newer MRI credential from CQR?

A radiography credential earned before 2011 doesn't exempt an MRI credential earned on or after January 1st, 2011. ARRT's CQR rules apply separately to each time-limited credential. Your MRI credential has its own ten-year cycle, with CQR completed during the final three years.

Who must run the scanner during an MRI-guided breast biopsy at an ACR site?

A qualified MRI technologist must perform the MRI exam during a breast biopsy at an ACR-accredited site. ACR allows mammography techs to assist with the biopsy without meeting the MRI technologist qualifications. That assistance doesn't replace the qualified MRI tech at the scanner.
