Travel Physical Therapy Jobs in Massachusetts: FAQs
Can I use the compact for travel physical therapist jobs in Massachusetts?
Massachusetts isn't an active PT Compact state as of October 2026. A compact privilege from another state doesn't authorize practice here. An out-of-state PT needs Massachusetts licensure rather than purchasing a Massachusetts privilege through the compact.
Can I treat under supervision while my endorsement is pending?
Supervision doesn't let you start work while an endorsement application is pending. The Massachusetts Board's policy expressly excludes endorsement applicants from that option. Its limited exception is for eligible graduates awaiting exam results, rather than PTs already licensed in another state.
Who is the PT of record when a traveler takes over a caseload?
The initial evaluating PT remains the PT of record unless another therapist is designated in the record. 259 CMR 5.01 assigns that role responsibility for providing or supervising the patient's care. A change in who treats the patient doesn't, by itself, document a change in that role.
Does Massachusetts direct access remove every referral requirement?
Direct access doesn't remove every referral requirement in Massachusetts. APTA's Massachusetts guidance says patients can start PT without a physician referral. Insurers or organizational policies may still require one. State permission to treat doesn't guarantee that a payer will cover the visit without a referral.
