Travel Physical Therapist Jobs in Texas: FAQs

How long can a qualifying PT treat without a referral in Texas?

Up to 30 consecutive calendar days under Texas Rule 322.1. You need at least one year of licensure and liability coverage of at least $100,000 per claim and $300,000 annually. You also need a qualifying PT doctorate or at least 30 CCUs in differential diagnosis. Obtain the patient's signed board disclosure form before treatment starts. A referral is required to continue beyond 30 days.

Does renewing my home-state PT license renew my Texas compact privilege?

No, a Texas compact privilege expires with the home-state license expiration date in effect when the privilege was purchased. After renewing that license, you must separately renew the privilege. An assignment extension doesn't extend practice authority. The PT Compact purchasing guide explains the separate renewal.

Can I get a Texas temporary PT license while my endorsement application is pending?

Texas doesn't offer temporary licenses to endorsement applicants. The board's endorsement instructions list a fingerprint background check and the Jurisprudence Assessment Module among the requirements you must meet before a license is issued. Eligible PTs may use an issued Texas compact privilege instead.

Can Texas travel PT jobs include home health admission assessments?

A PT can perform the initial and comprehensive home health assessments when physical therapy is the only service ordered. Under federal home health requirements, the comprehensive assessment for a Medicare patient also determines eligibility for the benefit, including homebound status. This permits PT-led admissions for qualifying therapy-only cases.

Can a physician assistant refer a patient for physical therapy in Texas?

Texas includes physician assistants among qualifying referral sources when they are licensed and authorized to prescribe treatment within their professional scope. A referral does not have to come from a physician alone. Texas Rule 322.1 also recognizes other specified healthcare practitioners.
